Landslide risk survey seals fate of Chin capital
A Team of German geologists have confirmed that Hakha, the capital of Chin State, is too dangerous to live in. The team has deemed most of the city at very high risk of landslides, which are often caused by heavy rain.
The survey is the first step toward relocating the city. More than 4000 residents are already living in camps after being evacuated following landslides triggered by heavy rain in July.
“There are many more danger zones than areas that are safe to live in. But it will be impossible to move everybody in a short time,” U Tin Maung Soe, an official of the state government, told The Myanmar Times. “We’re looking for a new state capital.”
