Law on Minerals under revision
The government is revising the Law on Mining in the hope that its amendment will support sustainable development of valuable natural resources and bring the highest benefits to the nation.
A workshop to learn and consult the proposed changes took place in Vientiane on Monday, which also provided participants and stakeholders from the minerals sector the opportunity to comment on the amendment draft to Minerals Law.
The government promulgated the Law on Mining for the first time in 1997. The law was amended in 2008 and had its name changed to Law on Minerals. The second amendment to the law was made in 2011.
This third amendment follows the country’s direction to develop a set of key Mineral Development Policy principles and establish an overarching strategy at national level, which will guide the actions of all government agencies and ministries that oversee or engage in prospecting, exploration, mine development, mine operation and mine closure activities.
