Lower voter turnout likely: civil societies
Lack of awareness among the electorate of the April 1 by-elections could result in lower turnout at the polls as only about 6.01 percent of eligible voters checked the voter lists that were put up last month for public scrutiny, civil society organisations in said. Blaming the lack of awareness on poor advertising by Union Election Commission and insufficient voter education by political parties, the civil society groups and the Election Reform Coordination Body said in a statement on March 4 that the UEC should use more creative and vibrant ways to attract voters. Ma Shwe Yee Win, executive director of Peace and Justice Myanmar, said the election commission could advertise the elections on popular television channels.
