Myanmar tops the list of the rare red-crowned crane population in South-East Asia
Myanmar becomes a country which can conserve the highest number of the rare red-crowned cranes in South East Asia, said Thet Zaw Naing of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) (Myanmar Program).
Since 2016, the Forest Department has been working on the conservation and research of the rare red-crowned crane species in Kahaema, Maubin, Pantanaw and Eainmae Townships in Ayeyawady Region, in cooperation with Minmahlagyun wildlife sanctuary and the WCS (Myanmar Program).
“We found and conserved 33 red-crowned crane nests in 2016, 138 in 2017 and 184 in 2018. The number of red-crowned cranes spotted in 2016 was over 400 and over 600 in 2018. It is not a significant increase in the number of red-crowned cranes. Thanks to the interests and cooperation of locals in the conservation and research, we can record the higher number of red-crowned cranes. Our works will not achieve such kind of success, without the help of locals. We also spotted the red-crowned cranes in other places like Rakhine and Kayah States. We cannot estimate the number of red-crowned cranes as we are unable to do research there. Myanmar is said to the country which has the highest number of red-crowned cranes in South East Asia,” he added.
