Disaster centre sounds new flood alerts

Residents in Chumphon, Ranong and Nakhon Si Thammarat are being warned of heavy rainfall, flash floods and mudslides over the next few days. National Disaster Warning Centre issued a warning on January 18 about bad weather in the three southern provinces. The centre has warned locals in Chumphon’s Phato and Thung Tako districts, Kra Buri and La-un districts in Ranong and Phrommakhiri, Nop Phi Tham and Lan Saka districts in Nakhon Si Thammarat about possible flash floods and mudslides following heavy downpours in their communities. The centre also urged people planning to travel to flood-prone areas to exercise extreme caution.​​ On Tuesday night, more torrential rain pounded the South, resulting in flooding on Phetkasem Road that caused heavy traffic congestion. Traffic jams were reported on two stretches of the road in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Bang Saphan district due to damaged bridges caused by downpours.
