Start-up for refinery construction

Construction of phase one of a landmark $3 billion oil refining plant kicks off today in Sihanoukville province, after many delays since the company announced plans in December 2012. Cambodian Petrochemical Company (CPC) formed a joint venture with China Perfect Machinery Industry Corp (Sinomach) for the construction in 2012 on 365 hectares of land in Preah Sihanouk and Kampot provinces. It was planned to be completed in 2018 with a capacity to produce five million tonnes per year. Mao Chetravuth, personal assistant to the CPC president, said yesterday that the delays had been due mainly to the company needing to spend more time on environmental impact assessments, land clearing, port development, preparing crude and refined oil tanks and other infrastructure.
