Teachers call for better security after educator’s murder

Teachers around the country demonstrated on January 22 calling for better protection of educators after one of their colleagues was abducted and shot dead in Kachin State’s Hpakant township.​​ Primary school teacher U Aung Zin Tun, who was assigned to Hpakant township’s Nantmaphit village, was reportedly kidnapped from his house and murdered. According to local media, three unknown men arrived on two motorcycles at the teacher’s house on January 18. His body was found later the same day. In cities around the country on January 22, teachers and supporters called for justice as well as better protections for the nation’s educators who often serve in difficult situations and in conflict zones. The Myanmar Teachers’ Federation led marches of solidarity in Mandalay City, Monywa and Yangon.
