Yangon govt ups transport spending for new buses
The Yangon Regional government will revise its budget for the fiscal year in order to purchase 1000 new vehicles for the city’s new public bus system, region minister for finance and planning U Myint Thaung told The Myanmar Times. The city-wide Yangon Bus Service, which started earlier this month, represents a radical overhaul of the route system and the structure of the companies in charge of operating them. But delays in purchasing new vehicles mean that the YBS buses are – aside from the addition of a YBS sticker – largely the same ageing fleet that operated under the old system. There is also a shortage of buses, which is resulting in long queues at bus stops and overcrowding at rush hour. U Myint Thaung said that new buses are a priority, and that the government has earmarked an additional K70 billion for investment in public transportation.
