Factories urged to follow wastewater regulations

Some factories in the Mandalay Industrial Zone still fail to treat their wastewater to conform to regulations, the region’s Department of Environmental Conservation said. Its assistant director U Thant Zin Tun said the problem has been ongoing since May last year when factories, including four alcohol distilleries, were inspected. When inspectors went back to check in December, two alcohol distilleries were ordered to close. “According to regulations issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, the wastewater disposed by factories, including alcohol distilleries, must have a BOD [biochemical oxygen demand] value of 50 mg/l, not exceeding the reading.
