Good infrastructure vital for ASEAN

The availability of good infrastructure at the national level of ASEAN countries is a prerequisite if they are to benefit from regional economic integration, delegates told a panel at the World Economic Forum on ASEAN on May 11. “Better physical infrastructure development in the country is important because it can lure foreign direct investment, reduce the cost of transportation of goods and also increase tourist arrivals,” said the Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol. Mr Chanthol said building quality infrastructure has always been a priority for the Cambodian government which is reflected in its annual national budget. “That budget indicates government spending. But we also get soft loans from foreign banks and multilateral lending agencies to build highways, railways and seaports,” he told the WEF on ASEAN panel discussion.
