Lao ministry sets target yields for agriculture

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is asking farmers around the country to grow 4.2 million tonnes of rice this fiscal year, seeking to boost commercial production and ensure food security.

According to the figures provided by the ministry, 2.1 million tonnes of the total rice harvest would be used for local consumption, 400,000 tonnes as a stockpile, 60,000 tonnes as rice seed, 640,000 tonnes for processing and one million tonnes for local sale and export.

The ministry’s Planning and Cooperation Department Director General, Mr Xaypradeth Chounlamany reported the set targets at the ministry’s annual agriculture meeting in Vientiane.
