Lao trucks unable to enter China at Boten border crossing

Lao trucks delivering goods to China have to transfer their freight to Chinese trucks at the Boten international checkpoint in Luang Namtha province, officials have said, citing the smaller size of Lao trucks. Another official in Luang Prabang province also said that Lao trucks could not cross into China via the Boten border, while Chinese trucks can deliver goods to many places in Laos. But an anonymous Luang Namtha provincial Public Works and Transport Department official told Vientiane Times on December 26 that Lao trucks are able to drive into China through through the Boten border crossing. We have not banned Lao trucks from delivering goods to China and they can go there if they want to, he said. It may be that Lao truck operators are signing deals with companies to deliver goods from Laos, especially in the northern provinces, to the Laos-China border at Boten, the official speculated.
