Minister seeks land law decision

The Agriculture Minister has urged stakeholders to wind up consultations on the agricultural land draft law on December 20 to let experts prepare it for Cabinet review. The plea was made at a two-day National Consultation Workshop on “Agriculture Land Law” which ended on December 19. About 300 government officials, civil society organizations, farmers and community network members attended the event at the InterContinental Hotel in Phnom Penh. Minister Veng Sakhon said the draft law is very important and needs to be approved quickly to address challenges such as the provision of economic land concessions. Some investment companies were clearing forest before getting ministry approval and this affected the interests of citizens. There were problems of land grabs and over ownership. Mining problems that damaged land and leasing land along the border were among other issues.
