Nippon Foundation supports IDPs

Pledging to maintain peace, the Karen National Union has called on the Myanmar government and international organisations to work together to help internal displaced persons in the Kayin State. KNU chairman General Mutu Say Poe said IDPs, who fled to Thailand during the conflict with the Tatmadaw, should be able to return to Myanmar without difficulty. “The government, international bodies and KNU should cooperate for the sake of the people,” he said last Friday. The KNU – a political party with an armed wing – is one of the eight signatories of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement. It has been a strong proponent of both ethnic unity and the involvement of ethnic groups in the government peace process.
