Southern islands face steep decline in tourism

The number of tourists visiting the twin island getaways of Don Det and Don Khon in the Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands) area of Khong district, Champassak province has dramatically fallen say local authorities. The Head of the Boat Tour Association in Nakasang village, Khong district, Mr Bounseum Chanthalangsy told Vientiane Times during a visit to the village last week that the port of Nakasang would normally receive over 50,000 visitors travelling to Don Det and Don Khon in previous years, but that this year it was believed that the number has drastically dropped. “Thai tourists are the main visitors of our islands followed by domestic and foreign tourists; I’m really not sure why the numbers have dropped so much this year,” he said.
