Stricter environment rules and fiercer competition threaten small paper firms

Small paper producers with an annual capacity of 10,000-20,000 tons will face more difficulties in 2018 due to stricter regulations on wastewater treatment and harsher competition from big companies, heard a meeting in HCMC last week. Vietnam Pulp and Paper Association general secretary Vu Ngoc Bao said more stringent criteria for environmental protection would be the biggest challenge for small paper companies, which do not usually treat their wastewater properly. “Things will be different in the near future and paper enterprises will have to make changes as the punishment against those violating environmental regulations will be significantly harsher in 2018,” Bao told the event held to announce an exhibition on Vietnamese paper and pulp set to take place in June next year. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is developing and collecting comments on a set of environment protection criteria for paper production.
