NA debates amendments to law on electricity

Despite the draft amendment to the Law on Electricity being approved, numerous issues have been relayed to the drafting sub-committee for improvement following comments and recommendations from National Assembly members. Electricity project authorisation, impact compensation or resettlement, and project concessions were some of the topics that drew the attention of NA members during their debate on the draft amendment at the ongoing NA session on May 9. The draft states that provincial governors and the Vientiane mayor may authorise electricity projects that have installed capacity of between 100-5,000 kilowatts (5 megawatts).  However, the law being promulgated permits provincial governors and the mayor to authorise projects with a maximum installed capacity of 15 megawatts.
