Panasonic turning up volume on Asian TV ops

Panasonic looks to build up to 50% more televisions in Asia outside Japan by fiscal 2020, taking advantage of low labor costs to churn out mass-market to top-of-the-line sets. The Japanese appliance manufacturer targets 3 million units of production capacity in the region by then. More lines will be added at Malaysian and Vietnamese plants, apparently at a cost of around 1 billion yen ($8.98 million), to bolster output of offerings including ultrahigh-definition 4K sets. Certain aspects of design development for 4K TVs will also be moved from Japan to Malaysia to accelerate the development process.
