Khammuan raises the bar in rice production

The agricultural practices commonly employed in Khammuan province are still mostly traditional but farmers are gradually being introduced to modern methods so they can grow better quality rice and earn more money.

The introduction of modern equipment is expected to help ease the sowing and harvesting of rice, as also is the use of fertilisers, machinery to plough the land, and pesticides to kill insects. 

Most farmers struggle to make a living and it is difficult for them to buy animals, good quality seeds and modern equipment so they are a long way from becoming model agricultural families.

To address this problem, Director of the Agriculture and Forestry Department in Khammuan province, Mr Bounchan Xaipanya, is exploring ways to make Khammuan the biggest rice producer and exporter in Laos.
