Luang Prabang tourist numbers top 600,000

Tourist arrivals during 2016 to the World Heritage town of Luang Prabang rose to more than 601,000, from over 500,000 in 2015, and this number is expected to rise further in 2017, the local tourism authority said. Head of the province’s Information, Culture and Tourism Department, Mr Soulithit Norkhounphol, told Vientiane Times on January 3 they didn’t have the official figures in yet but those may even increase a little further when the final calculations are done. This year we expect the number of tourists will rise to more than 700,000 because there are now more flights between Luang Prabang and Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea and China, he noted. We are also working on promoting our province to attract extra tourists, while the number of guesthouses and hotels is now increasing with some under construction to serve domestic and overseas visitors during peak season, he added.
