MoE not responsible for religious content in textbooks

The Ministry of Education has responded to criticisms on social media that new civic education textbooks have included the four great religions – Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and Hinduism – by denying it is responsible for the curriculum. “The texts books are not from our departments. We can only teach with the curriculum approved by the National Curriculum Committee,” U Khine Myae, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education told The Myanmar Times on March 6. In the 2016-17 academic year, the MoE started implementing the new curriculum for kindergarten-level. The new curriculum for Grade 1 will be implemented in the coming academic year and the new curriculum for Grade 2 is still being processed.
