Ten reported dead in latest clashes

Renewed fighting in Shan State is reported to have claimed at least 10 lives even as the government and leaders of armed ethnic groups met in Nay Pyi Taw in their latest attempt to hammer out a nationwide ceasefire accord.

Representatives of armed ethnic groups warned that continuing offensives by the Tatmadaw were undermining their confidence in the ceasefire process and urged President U Thein Sein to order the military to stop its attacks.

The Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) said on 9 September that five Tatmadaw soldiers and four RCSS fighters were killed in fighting in Loileng district on 7 and 8 September.
