Building owners in Mandalay will soon face hefty fines that may exceed the value of the buildings if the structures are built without permits or if they flout regulations, warned the Mandalay City Development Committee. From April 1, fines will be increased 75 percent for buildings that fail to comply with MCDC regulations or if they are constructed without or beyond the permit, MCDC’s Department of Buildings and Warehouses Division Head U Khin Maung Nyunt told The Myanmar Times. He said the fines had to be increased because building owners often contravened the MCDC regulations. “Previously the amount of the fine was small. So, people thought they will pay the fines later. There are some cases of construction beyond the approval. Everything seems okay after paying the fines.
