New facility for mentally ill patients

A mental illness treatment center will be built in Kandal province’s Kandal Stueng district at a cost of $500,000 in a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Phnom Penh City Hall and Kandal Provincial Hall. On March 11, Social Affairs Minister Vong Soth, Phnom Penh Governor Pa Socheatvong and Kandal provincial governor Mao Phirun participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the building. The facility will share a plot of land with the Khmer-French-Hungarian Friendship Orphanage Center in Bakou commune’s Bakou village. Mr. Socheatvong said the center would provide care and treatment for people with mental disorders. He added that the kingdom lacked facilities to treat mentally ill patients.
